Itty BItty Beach Bum Hat

Sizes 0-3 mo, 3-6 mo, 6-12 mo, and 12-24 mo

I designed this pattern in part for my son and also for a custom order for a customer at my Etsy shop. I had intended to sell the pattern, but during testing I found that some of the sizes were not as accurate as I had hoped. I decided that since this pattern was my first working with different sizes and was not quite up to my usual standards, I would offer it for free here on my blog instead! So, this is my little gift to you this summer! It works up quickly, and it is quite adaptable to your baby’s own personal style! I worked it in worsted weight acrylic, but I would recommend a cotton yarn for truly cool summer wear. Enjoy!

Materials:

J hook (or hook size needed to obtain correct gauge)

Worsted Weight Yarn

Tapestry Needle

Abbreviations:

Ch: Chain

Sl st: slip stitch

Sc: single crochet

Hdc: half double crochet

Dc: double crochet

Beg ch 2: beginning chain 2

Rev sc: reverse single crochet

Special stitches:

Reverse single crochet— working from left to right, rather than right to left as usual, insert hook into next stitch, pull up loop, yarn over and pull loop through 2 loops already on hook.  Gauge:

First three rounds of dc should measure approximately 3 3/4 inches in diameter.

0-3 Month Size

Ch 4, join w/ sl st to make ring.

Rnd 1: ch 2 (counts as first st here and throughout), work 11 dc in ring, join w/ sl st in beg ch 2. (12 dc)

Rnd 2: ch 2, dc in same st,* 2 dc in next st, repeat from * around, join w/ sl st in beg ch 2. (24 dc)

Rnd 3: ch 2, dc in same st, dc in next st, *2 dc in next st, dc in next st, repeat from * around, join w/ sl st in beg ch 2. (36 dc)

Rnd 4-8: ch 2, dc in next st and in each st around, join w/ sl st in beg ch 2. (36 dc)

Rnd 9: ch 2, working in front loops only, hdc in next st, 2 hdc in next st,* hdc in next 2 st, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join w/ sl st in beg ch 2. (48 hdc)

Rnd 10: ch 2, (working in both loops as usual again) hdc in next 2 st, 2 hdc in next st, *hdc in next 3 st, 2 hdc in next st, repeat from * around, join w/ sl st in beg ch 2. (60 hdc)

Rnd 11: ch 1, work rev sc in each st around, join to first rev sc w/ sl st. Fasten off and weave in ends.

3-6 Month  Size

Ch 4, join w/ sl st to make ring.

Braided Rope Embellishment Instructions:

Cut 6 strands of contrasting color yarn measuring twice the diameter of your finished hat (Example: 12-24 mo. size finished size is approximately 18 inches, so you would cut 36 inch strands.) Gather strands and tie in knot 2-3 inches from one end. Divide into 2 strand sections and braid remaining length to about 2-3 inches from other end, tying another knot to secure the braid. Weave braid evenly in and out of stitches of final round before brim of hat, tying ends in a square knot.

For a more feminine style of embellishment, either make a shorter braid and tie in a simple bow just above hat brim, or add a large crocheted flower.
